K2 Productions recently had the opportunity to film a “Why We Watch” documentary in Charlotte for Bleacher Reports featuring Christy Martin, first female boxing world champion.
K2 created our own interview footage and combined that with stock footage from major sports and entertainment broadcasters such as HBO and Sports Illustrated. We filmed Christy at the ring where she spars, so it was a great environment to capture her spirit.
This pioneer in another male-dominated sport broke through barriers to make people stand up and take notice. With a record of 49-6-3 and 31 knockouts, Christy is truly a fighter — both inside and out. Rising from her small town roots, she made the cover of Sports Illustrated’s April 15, 1996 issue with the headline The Lady Is a Champ.
“Women’s boxing was nowhere before she came around,” said Steve Farhood, Showtime’s boxing analyst. “Christy Martin fought like a man and looked like a woman.”
But despite her victories in the ring, Christy stood years of emotional abuse from her husband. On November 23, 2010, Christy’s husband beat her, sliced her calf muscle nearly off, and shot her in the chest only four inches from her heart. She survived.
“Boxing was the greatest therapy I could have asked for,” said Christy about her recovery after her attack.
Christy has heard people say that a fight doesn’t start until you get bloody, and that’s when she would get the most determined. She never wanted to be known as the woman who started bleeding and walked away. She wanted to be known as the woman who stuck with in and won. Christy is still looking for an opportunity to get her fiftieth win.
